When your AC is running but the house keeps getting warmer, it is stressful, especially in South Florida heat. Here are the most common reasons we find when we visit homes in Margate, Coconut Creek, Coral Springs and the rest of Broward County, plus a few safe things you can check before you call.
1. The thermostat is not set correctly
It sounds simple, but it happens a lot. Make sure it is set to Cool, the temperature is below the room temperature, and the batteries are good. If the screen is blank, change the batteries first.
2. A dirty air filter
A clogged filter blocks airflow. The AC runs, but very little cold air reaches the rooms, and over time the coil can freeze. In our area, many homes need a new filter every 1 to 3 months. Need immediate AC repair? Call us at (954) 513-7948
3. A clogged drain line
Our humidity makes drain lines clog easily. Many systems have a safety switch that shuts the AC off when the drain backs up, so a clogged line can look like an AC that “stopped working.” If you see water around the air handler, turn the AC off and call us.
4. Ice on the coil or refrigerant lines
Ice usually means low airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system off and let it thaw. Do not chip the ice. If it comes back, the system needs to be checked.
5. A bad capacitor
The capacitor helps the outside unit start. When it fails, the inside fan may run but the outside unit does not, and you get warm air. This is one of the most common repairs we do, especially after very hot days.
6. A tripped breaker or electrical problem
Check your breaker panel once. If the AC breaker trips again after you reset it, do not keep resetting it. That is a sign of an electrical or AC problem that needs a professional. Because we are licensed for both HVAC and electrical, we can check both sides.
7. The system is old or the wrong size
Systems that are 10 to 15 years old or more lose efficiency and break down more often. A system that is too small for the home may run all day and never catch up. If repairs keep adding up, it may be time to look at a new AC installation.
